Jackson Elementary Celebrates Black History Month with a Community Program
Jackson Elementary will host a week of meaningful celebrations in honor of Black History Month, culminating in a special community-wide program on February 26.
This year’s Black History Month festivities reflect the deep roots of Jackson Elementary and its historic significance within the Chapel Hill community. A dedicated team of parent leaders — including Ashley Gardner, Shannon Banks, and Krystal Johnson — has worked alongside school staff to plan events that celebrate heritage, honor legacy, and inspire the next generation. The celebration will feature several key components:
- Daily Community Spotlight: Throughout the month, Jackson has highlighted individuals who have made a positive impact in the community or whose lives have been shaped by their experience at Jackson. Selected participants have shared their biographies, experiences, contributions, accomplishments, and what they hope to be remembered for. You can see these on the campus Facebook page.
- Spirit Week (February 23–27): Students and staff will participate in a themed spirit week that celebrates culture and heritage, including opportunities to showcase cultural attire.
- Black History Month Program (February 26): The week will culminate in a special program bringing together students, staff, parents, and community members for a celebration and performance. The event will take place at 5:00 pm at Jackson Elementary.
Parent organizers say the celebration is about more than a single event — it is about honoring the foundation of the community. “Having this program at Jackson Elementary is important because it stands as the origin and foundation for African Americans in the Chapel Hill community,” said Gardner, Banks & Johnson. “Black history is crucial for understanding the contributions, struggles, and resilience of African Americans, which helps shape a more inclusive history.”
