Chapel Hill, Smith County - The Chapel Hill Independent School District’s enrollment for Pre-Kindergarten (PreK) and Head Start, also known as the Early Childhood programs, is now open for the academic year 2023-2024. Several events will be held in April to help parents and families register their children.
Registration Events Time And Dates:
Wise Elementary: Tuesday, April 11, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the Library
Jackson Elementary: Wednesday, April 12, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the Cafeteria/Computer Lab
“The Early Childhood programs help children develop the learning skills needed to meet educational goals,” said Executive Director Dr. Joshua Tremont.
CHISD has partnered with Region 7 to further support Head Start students. PreK/Head Start classes begin at the age of three, and the Head Start classes maintain a teacher-student ratio of 10-to-1. The program is designed for students who require school readiness skills, aimed at bridging the gap and preparing them for success in school. These skills will ensure they are well-equipped to learn when they begin Kindergarten.
At the end of their first year in Early Childhood, students will have achieved various developmental milestones across different areas of learning. Here are some examples:
Social and emotional development: PreK students will have developed basic social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperating with others.
Language and literacy: Students will have developed an understanding of basic language concepts, such as identifying letters, recognizing their own names, and following simple directions.
Math: PreK students will have developed an understanding of basic mathematical concepts, such as counting, identifying shapes and colors, and recognizing simple patterns.
Science: Students may have learned about basic scientific concepts, such as living and non-living things, the weather, and the seasons.
Physical development: PreK students will have developed general motor skills, such as holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, running, and jumping.
