For Chapel Hill High School senior Jacqueline Berrum, standing out is nothing new. Whether she is leading the Bulldog Band as drum major or putting her skills to work in the welding shop, Berrum has found ways to challenge herself throughout high school.
Her interest in welding has taken her beyond the classroom and into competition, where she has had the opportunity to put what she has learned to the test. At one welding competition, Berrum stood out for another reason: she was the only female student in her class competing.
In a field traditionally dominated by men, Berrum described being the only girl at the competition as a “very cool” experience. Rather than feeling out of place, she found a welcoming environment among the other competitors.
That support allowed Berrum to focus on what brought her there in the first place: improving her skills, competing and gaining valuable experience.
Her dedication in the welding program has also earned the respect of those who work with her every day.
“She is a very talented person, and she is always willing to help others when they need it,” welding teacher Mr. Payne said.
That willingness to help others shows that Berrum’s success in the program goes beyond what she can accomplish on her own. As she continues developing her skills, she is also using what she has learned to support the students around her.
Although she had plenty of support, competition did not come without challenges. Berrum had to work through difficulties with equipment while also learning the protocols and procedures competitors were expected to follow. Those challenges helped her realize that once the competition begins, everyone faces many of the same obstacles, regardless of gender.
For Berrum, the experience became about more than being the only girl competing. It was an opportunity to step outside her comfort zone, test her abilities and continue developing a skill she is passionate about.
From leading the Bulldog Band as drum major to stepping into the welding shop and competing, Berrum has embraced two very different roles during her time at Chapel Hill. Both require confidence, responsibility and a willingness to take on challenges.
Her experience in welding has also reinforced a simple idea: ability is not defined by gender. By continuing to pursue the things she enjoys, she is creating her own path and proving she is more than willing to take on whatever challenge comes next.
