About Coach O'Bannon

Coach O'Bannon is in his first year back at Chapel Hill.  He was originally a member of the Chapel Hill faculty during 1994-1998.  This is his fourteenth year as an educator.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&M University in 1994.  He currently teaches English II and English II PreAp/GT.  He is also a varsity football and basball coach.

Course Descriptions

English II Pre-AP (0021)
Grade: 10    Length: 2 semesters     Credit: 1 credit per year        GPA weight: 1.2
Prerequisites: Minimum average of ‘85" in English I and/or teacher recommendation
(See other prerequisites listed under English I Pre-AP.)
This course emphasizes:

  • a higher level of complexity from Pre-AP English I in preparation for othe 11th and 12th grade Advanced Placement program
  • appreciation of the written word and nuances of language
  • willingness to analyze literature which may at first seem obscure
  • acquisition of college preparatory vocabulary
  • independent and critical reading
  • using the writing process to write analytical essays

English II Pre-AP Gifted and Talented (0022)
Grade: 10    Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.2
Prerequisites: (See listing for English I Pre-AP Gifted and Talented.)
In addition to the English II Pre-AP curriculum, this course emphasizes:

  • developing vocabulary, grammatical, and analytical skills necessary for college
  • responding to novels, plays, non-fiction, poetry, and short stories
  • research skills
  • critical analysis and production of student-generated literary products

English II (0020)
Grade: 10    Length: 2 semesters     Credit: 1 credit per year          GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisite: Successful completion of English I
This course emphasizes:

  • utilizing the writing process to develop composition skills by writing different types of multi-paragraph themes of increasing complexity; emphasis on exit-level TAKS ELA
  • developing the skills needed for successful completion of exit-level TAKS ELA
  • using an analytical approach in study of various literary genres; study noted authors from around the world and critically evaluate their works

Boys Athletics (2060, 2044)
Grades: 10-12    Length: 2 semesters     Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisite: Athletic Director approval
This course emphasizes:

  • football skills
  • track and field
  • strength and conditioning
  • teamwork through competition

9th Grade Boys Athletics (2058)
Grade: 9     Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 1 credit per year        GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisite: Participation in summer workouts and Athletic Director approval
Note: Ninth grade boy athletes should sign up for this course if they wish to play football and any other sport.
This course emphasizes:

  • developing the same skills involved in Boys Athletics (see above)
