Course Descriptions

Health Science Technology III-Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (5021)
Grade: 12    Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 2 credits per year       GPA weight: 1.1
Prerequisites: Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology
Must be seventeen (17) by September 1 of the school year
Application and interview to be approved by Champion EMS personnel
Must complete Red Cross CPR training prior to going on ambulance runs

Note: This course meets two periods per day and is provided through the cooperation of Champion EMS from Longview with their certified personnel teaching this course targeted at offering Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) training to senior level students.  This course articulates with Tyler Junior College for 3 hours of elective credit with a grade of B or better. Such a grade qualifies as an Advanced Measure on the Distinguished Achievement Plan.  Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible for the Emergency Medical Technician Certification.

This course emphasizes:

  • the training necessary to be certified as an EMT
  • twenty (20) hours of clinical observation within a hospital setting (emergency room, maternity)
  • first-hand observation of emergency services through a minimum of five (5) ambulance runs, which must be completed outside school hours
  • application of skills learned to a variety of health care occupations
