About Ms. Scheidler

Mrs. Scheidler is in her eighteenth year of teaching at Chapel Hill.  She teaches French I, French II PAP, French III PAP and French IV AP.  Every other year students are offered the opportunity to travel to France as well as other areas in Europe.  All students are welcome if they meet the requirements.

Course Descriptions

French I (0610)
Grades: 9-11    Length: 2 semesters     Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisites: Grade 9-Language Arts average of "85" in 8th grade; teacher recommendation
This course emphasizes:

  • basic speaking, writing and comprehension of the French language
  • exploration and comparison of linguistic and cultural bonds between English and French

French II (0620)
Grades: 10-12    Length: 2 semesters     Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French I
This course emphasizes:

  • a more intense continuation of French I with greater emphasis placed on grammar, structure, and oral fluency
  • French contributions to western civilization in the areas of art, literature, cinema, diplomacy, technology, architecture, and science

French II Pre-AP (0621)
Grades: 10-11    Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.2
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French I, teacher approval, and expectation to continue studies into the third and/or fourth year of French.
In addition to the requirements in French II, this course emphasizes:

  • greater attention to oral proficiency
  • cultural distinctions
  • a presentation of some literary readings

French III Pre-AP (0630)
Grades: 11-12     Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 1 credit per year      GPA weight: 1.2
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French I and French II and teacher approval
This course emphasizes:

  • conversational French through greater expansion of vocabulary, refinement of grammar points, and verb manipulation
  • fluency in written and oral French
  • French history from its classical beginnings to its present republic

French IV AP (0640)
Grades: 11-12    Length: 2 semesters      Credit: 1 credit per year       GPA weight: 1.4
Prerequisite: Successful completion of French I, II, and III and teacher approval

Note: Students enrolled in this course are required to pay for and take the Advanced Placement French Language Exam. Approximate cost to the student is $45. Any student who scores a 3, 4, or 5 on this exam may earn 3 hours of college credit.

This course emphasizes:

  • refinement of linguistic abilities pursued through French literature and readings
  • discussions of French literature, politics, culture, and cultural situations to increase fluency
