We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to our Jackson Parents, Guardians, and Volunteers for their efforts and their support in making this 2007-2008 school year a successful one for our Jackson students and staff.  Below are few highlights from the 2007-2008 school year:

Teacher of Year & Para of the Year Nominees
The staff took time to vote for Jackson's Teacher of the Year Nominee. The person chosen this year to be in this year's running for the District honor is MS. ANNIE JOHNSON, Pre-Kinder Teacher.  The staff also voted for Para of the Year. The person chosen to be in the running for the District honor is MS. VERONICA OLIVARES!  Congratulations and good luck to these ladies!

PROJECT TORNADO ...
On Tuesday, 29 April 2008, KLTV Chief Meteorologist, Mr. Mark Scirto, presented Project Tornado to the second graders of Jackson Elementary.  Mr. Scirto gave vital and interesting information about the steps to take in case of a tornado and flooding. All students received a packet of safety information and a sticker (identifying Smith County and other surrounding counties/areas) to attach to their T.V. remotes.  The second grade team of Jackson Elementary presented Mr. Scirto with a book of weather riddles.  Our school was highlighted during the KLTV weather report later that same day at 6:00 p.m. 

CINCO DE MAYO ...
Our First Graders put on a great show on the night of May 1st. The stage and cafeteria were decorated in vibrant colors and the mood was festive. The girls and boys sang and danced to music that evening which depicted what "Cinco de Mayo" is all about. All speeches were recited in both Spanish and English. It took many hours of practice by students and teachers to accomplish such a successful program. After the program, everyone (about 300 in attendance) was treated to a costume parade. The night ended with the usual great feast catered by El Charro's.

HEAD START ANNUAL PARENT VOLUNTEER BANQUET ...
Head Start's Ninth Annual Parent/Volunteer Appreciation Banquet (A Mexican Fiesta) was held on Monday, May 5, 2008. The night was filled with recognition of Parent Volunteers, Jackson Site Staff (Ms. F. Griffith), Jackson Staff, and Region VII. The parents enjoyed a performance by their Head Starters and a wonderful meal prepared by Ms. Felicia Griffith. It was a fun evening for all.

GIFTED AND TALENTED ...
Jackson Elementary held its annual Gifted and Talented Parent Mixer (Coordinated and Planned by our wonderful Counselor, Ms. Angela Johnson-Lacy) on Tuesday, 22 April 2008. The night's guest speaker was CHISD Elementary Curriculum Coordinator, Ms. Helyn Morriss. Ms. Morriss talked with parents about the GT program and answered questions. After the enlightening presentation, a light meal was served. Before leaving for the night, each parent received a Parent Homework Dictionary which includes all subjects and grade levels and an Empowering Parents School Box (No Child Left Behind).

NATIONAL STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK (May 5-9, 2008)
We kicked off National Staff Appreciation Week with an All-Day Spa for all Jackson Staff. It was enjoyed by everyone! I received such comments as: "Thank you for the mini spa!" "It was wonderful!" and "I feel so much better now." PTA also treated the staff to lunch from Southern Magnolia on Wednesday. Since this week is also National Nurse's Week, the staff also honored our nurse, Ms. Starlea Atkison. She was quite surprised and appreciative.

TRACK AND FIELD DAY ...
Track and Field day (Friday, May 9, 2008) was a huge success. The rain stayed away so that our students could enjoy this annual day of fun and games. Many of our wonderful parents, guardians, and community members came out to show their support.

I know we all are happy to see the many changes underway here at Jackson. Although there have been a few inconveniences (especially rerouting traffic), you (our parents) have been wonderful, understanding, and patient. Thank you, parents!
