Another six weeks has passed quickly. Our 5th and 6th six weeks will continue to focus on grammar and the writing process. There will be an emphasis on pronouns and prepositional phrases along with continuted practice in sentence fluency using correct capitalization and punctuation. The students will be actively involved in the writing process creating persuasive essays. Students will use their higher level thinking skills by evaluating their essays with the same TAKS rubric the state of Texas uses to score compositions. Finally, our school year will conclude with a literature unit on the novel Where the Red Fern Grows. I would like to remind parents that 6th grade English is NOT a TAKS tested subject. Therefore, I do not give an overabundance of homework. Your child can expect homework if he/she is at anytime earning a 75% or below in my class. When a quiz or test date is given, students are expected to study their notes and assignments found in their green spiral. Please remember to look at your child's planner so you are aware of what your child does everyday in class. Students can also earn 100pts. extra credit each week for filling out their planner correctly and having their parent sign it over the weekend. |

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS All Year This course will emphasize language skills through reading, speaking, and writing activities. An emphasis on grammar, vocabulary development, and stages of the writing process are ongoing components of the program. Through an aligned and integrated curriculum using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) students take notes, organize, and summarize material to become proficient in English. The course focuses on punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and correct usage of the parts of speech. PRE-AP ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS All Year The purpose of the Pre-Advanced Placement course is to give middle school students the opportunity to practice, at the appropriate level, skills that will enable them to be successful in Advanced Placement classes at the high school level. The middle school Pre-AP class exposes students to the type of expectations and activities required by the AP program. Strong attention will be given to creativity and higher level thinking skills. Successful students in the Pre-AP class are typically task oriented, proficient readers who are able to set priorities within regard to time and responsibilities. Parental support also plays a key role in the success of those students. |
