Welcome to Sixth Grade Reading

Mrs. D. Williams

Class Message

The more you read the better your reading will become. If you don't like to read you haven't really found something you are interested in. Pick up a book, open to a page and begin to read. Someday you will find something that hooks you and you won't be able to stop.

It is my sincere wish that my students find the love of reading while in my classroom. Nothing means more to me than to have a student tell me, " I didn't use to like to read, but I do now."

A Bit About Me

Chapel Hill has been my home all my life. I graduated from Chapel Hill and upon graduation I began attending Tyler Junior College and then transferred to Stephen F. Austin where I received my Bachelor of Science in Education Degree with a specialization in reading.

Of course, as I began my teaching career I returned home to Chapel Hill. I was hired to teach 5th grade and taught 5th grade for twenty-two years before transferring to the 6th grade where I have spent the last seven years teaching reading and serving as head of the reading department.

I have a wonderful husband, Jeff, and one daughter, Ashley, who graduated from Chapel Hill in 2006 and is currently attending the University of Texas at Tyler. We enjoy spending time together and look forward each year to our family vacation to Destin.

Nearly every morning as I drive to school I listen to the Brooks & Dunn song, "Only in America" because it motivates and reminds me that I never know what the future holds for the students in my classroom. Each and every student has the potential to be whatever they dream of being regardless of their background, and I am here to develop their skills and encourage them so maybe one day their dreams will come true.

Course Description

READING                                  All Year

The goal of the reading curriculum is to provide the skills and knowledge for students to become successful readers. This goal is met through an aligned and integrated curriculum using the TEKS. Strong emphasis is placed on vocabulary development, listening skills, reading rate, and comprehension skills. Literary appreciation is developed through exposure to the various genres of literature. The Accelerated Reader program is used to develop independent reading skills and encourage the desire to read.
