WELCOME TO THE FIFTH GRADE Week of October 6-10. This begins the second grading period and second period for AR reading. Report cards will be sent home this week.
Reading Selection this week: "From the Diary of Leigh Botts" Vocabulary Words (Matching test on Friday) cafeteria, demonstration, diary, racket, switch, triggered, clamp, medium, muffle, thrift shop Language Arts Students will review nouns, both proper and common. Continue the rules for capitaliztion. Social Studies: Students will be given the same thirty states to test over . The thirty states students must be able to locate on a map for this week's test are : Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland , Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota, Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri and Wisconsin. Students will also review map skills and study the challenges and adaptations of Native American groups. Social Studies Vocabulary Test: Ask to see your child's graded map and vocabulary tests. AR reading: All students have been tested and have a beginning of the year reading level. Each student has had the opportunity to check out three library books from the school library. They also know how many AR points to strive for in order to be eligible for the rewards at the end of the grading period. Please encourage them to read from their independent reading books for at least 30 minutes a day. Two independent reading grades will be averaged in to their six weeks' reading grade; one grade for the average percentage of correct answers on the AR tests taken and one grade for the percentage of points made from their expected goal for the six weeks. These two grades are in addition to other daily reading grades.
