Course Description

The Chapel Hill Middle School ESL program is diverse and expanding each year to better serve our second language learners.  The program is made up of three levels which are based on English language proficiency.  Because of the fact that placement is determined by proficiency level, all the ESL classes include students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

ESL1 is the most basic level.  The students at this level have 2 ESL classes - English and Reading.  This level includes a broad range of language proficiency - from non-English-speaking newcomers to the U.S.A. to students who have been in the country for a longer period of time but whose language skills, although more advanced,  remain in the beginning range of proficiency.  First language support (for our Spanish-speaking newcomers) is provided by Mrs. Lucia Marimon, our bilingual teaching assistant.

ESL 2 is the intermediate level.  The students at this level also have 2 ESL classes - English and Reading.

ESL 3 is the most advanced level.  The students at this level have only one ESL class - English.

In addition to the ESL classes, we also provide an ESL content mastery service to our students.  They may come to the ESL room at any time during the day to receive either academic or linguistic support for their other courses.
