Second Six Weeks Science Vocabulary List 

 Friction -  A force that opposes, or acts against, motion when two surfaces rub against each other 

 Magnetism (magnet) – The force of repulsion (pushing) or attraction (pulling) between poles of magnets 

 Attract (attraction) – Magnetic forces pull together , opposite poles of magnets are attracted 

 Repel (repulsion) – magnetic forces push apart; like poles of magnets repel  

 Gravity (gravitation) – force that holds things to the surface of Earth, the force that pulls all objects in the universe toward one another  

 Orbit – the path one body in space takes as it revolves around another body; such as that of Earth as it revolves around the Sun  

 Temperature –measurement of heat in an object

 Force – A push or pull that causes an object to move, stop, or change direction  Motion –the movement of an object 

 Energy – The ability to cause changes in matter 

 Insulator (insulate) – A material that does not carry electrons  

 Conductor (conduct) – A material that conducts energy easily 

 Reflection (reflect) – The light energy that bounces off objects  

 Refraction (refract) – The bending of light rays when they pass through a substance 

 Electromagnet – A temporary magnet made by passing electric current through a wire coiled around an iron bar 

 Lens – A piece of clear material that bends, or refracts, light rays passing through it 

 Vibration  (vibrate) – carries waves of sound)

 Volume – The loudness of a sound 

 Pitch – An element of sound determined by the speed which sound waves move ;How high or low a sound is. 

 Circuit – the path along which electricity can flow 

 Solar – energy from the Sun

 Tides (tide) – the daily rise and fall in the level of the ocean  

 Transparent – light rays can pass through it  

 Opaque – light rays cannot pass through it  

 Translucent – Some light rays pass through, however the material blurs the image
