Shoes for Kids

The Chapel Hill High School Student Senate sponsored its 12th annual Shoes for Kids project the week of December 8th. On Tuesday, December 9th, they took 80 Wise Elementary students to Payless Shoe Source, CiCi's Pizza, and to Discovery Science Center. They took 80 students from Jackson Elementary as well on Thursday, December 11th. The elementary students were allowed to select $20 worth of shoes & other merchandise at Payless and have "all you want" pizza buffet at CiCi's. Payless Shoes Source gives Chapel Hill High School a 20% discount and 1/2 price on every second pair of shoes bought. Approximately 56 high school students participated in the project each day. All high school students helped collect the money for this project through a "Spirit Foam" contest between the grades during Homecoming week. The students raised $4241.74 to fund this project. We are very proud of the effort our students put into this project. Hopefully, it is teaching them the importance of reaching out and helping others in their community.

Response from a Chapel Hill grandparent:

Yesterday my granddaughter was the recipient of a pair of new shoes and slippers. What I gathered from her story is this was sponsored by a group from the high school and that several high school students accompanied the younger students. She was very excited about the shoes and especially the trip to Cici's Pizza. She could hardly wait to tell me about it when I saw her last night. I just wanted to express my gratitude to the school, teachers and students that participated in this program. Not only did my granddaughter have a wonderful time, you are teaching students social responsibility. That is so important to the future of our society. Please express my appreciation and wishes for a very Merry Christmas to all involved in this project.
Sincerely,
Elaine Gonzales
