From the Counseling Center Countdown to Graduation! Seniors are in their final semester! Continuing our focus on preparing students and parents for life after high school, Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Greer provided guidance opportunity focusing on the college readiness and the financial aid process. Senior Classroom GuidanceØ November—Mrs. Palmer presented a power point presentation in English IV classrooms about the different kinds of financial aid, with a focus on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required before colleges and universities can offer grants, some scholarships, and work study. Students completed a worksheet which will serve as an outline to help them Ø with this process. Mrs. Greer assisted students in the computer lab to create a PIN number for themselves and their parents to be used in filing the FAFSA. Ø January—Seniors completed the FAFSA-on-the-Web worksheet as the counselors explained the step-by-step process. This document will be used for assist families in filing the FAFSA electronically. A senior newsletter provided over 25 scholarship opportunities and was mailed to parents. February 7—Annual Senior Parent Financial Aid Night Touted as a huge success, we had the largest turnout ever with over 60 students and parents. Mrs. Devon Wiggins, head of TJC’s Financial Aid Office, gave valuable financial aid information. To make this meeting have the greatest impact, TJC financial aid representatives actually assisted parents and students file their FAFSA on-line in CHS computer labs. At least 10 families completed the application on-line and many others began the process. KLTV-Channel 7 was on hand to interview CHS students and parents. Dual Credit Enrollment and Reimbursement from House Bill 1 Monies Twenty students will receive a reimbursement check as a reward for their success in first semester college English classes offered on our campus. In the second year of offering Dual Credit College Algebra at CHS, 19 students qualified and registered for this course, which represents a significant increase over the 4 students enrolled 2006-07. Much of the credit for this rise in enrollment goes to the preparation Mr. Joey Wilson provided in Bridges Math class. Overall, 42 students are currently enrolled in dual credit courses at CHS due in large part to the reimbursement commitment by our administration. Upcoming EventsØ Wednesday, March 5—Senior Day at TJC. TJC has prepared a special program on their campus just for CHS seniors to present opportunities at TJC. Ø Saturday, April 19—Preview Day at North Texas. Our fall college visit to SFA was so successful that we have scheduled a spring visit to North Texas. This opportunity will be available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.Ø Junior Parent Night about college planning and scholarships.--TBA |
