Band Directors

Neil_Smith.jpgNeil Smith

I started teaching right here at Chapel Hill as Jr. High Band Director/High School Assistant with James Hankins, from August 1975-May 1977. From there, I went to Troup as the only band director, from August 1977-May 1979. I quit teaching for five years, employed as a salesman for Senco Fastening Systems. I received a call from Jasper Huff (Troup HS Principal) and was offered a job back at Troup. I taught there from August 1984-May 1995. I received a call from Chapel Hill and was offered a job. I started that job in June 1995. I have taught 29 years. My bands have received 15 Sweepstakes awards. Every job that I have accepted as band director has been a process of building up troubled bands with low ratings.

I received a BM degree from SFA. I did graduate work at UT Tyler. I enjoy playing in Symphonies, riding motorcycles, and restoring old motor vehicles. I have toured with members of the Dallas Symphony and other small groups as "fill-in" musician on the bassoon. I also have led church choirs at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, First Baptist at Flint, and am currently in my 23rd year as choir director at County Line Baptist Church in Teaselville.

I have two brothers and three sisters. My oldest brother and two of his sons are band directors. My oldest sister is band director at Chapel Hill MS. I have been married to my wife, Candy, for 35 years, have one daughter who is curriculum coordinator of math for Winona ISD, and four grandchildren. When you have a lot of time, sit down with me and I will tell you about them.

22 years of teaching experience and 8 years at Chapel Hill High School.

I graduated from Lamar University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music and began my teaching career at Nederland High School where I received 3 Sweepstakes with the Concert Band. I also played the flute in the Beaumont Symphony for 6 years. We moved to Arlington in 1979 where we lived for 21 years. I taught private flute lessons, worked at Colvert Music Company, and taught elementary music and band for the Arlington I.S.D. for 10 years. We moved our family to Tyler in 2000 to begin my wonderful teaching career in Chapel Hill where I have been employed for 8 years.

When I came to Chapel Hill, Neil Smith made the decision to divide the High School Band for the first time in the history of the school for concert season. Each year has been more successful and has raised the quality of the band program with this change. We now have 4 years of Double Sweepstakes for the Symphonic and Concert bands.

My husband, Mark, is an accountant and the Business Manager for the UT/Tyler Cowan Center. We have been married 29 years. My children Mindy and Brady graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Mindy has a Marketing Degree from Texas A & M in College Station and Brady has a finance degree from UT/Tyler. Both of my parents majored in music. My mother is still teaching piano and my dad still serves as a band clinician, both at the young ages of "80-something".

My hobbies are playing the flute for various groups in the area, yard work, garage sales, health and physical fitness.
