About Ms. Morris

     Bettye Morris has taught at Chapel Hill High School for 25 years.  She is a native Tylerite who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism degree in Advertising and English.  She has two wonderful daughters, two lovable cats, and one friendly dog.  She and her daughters were fortunate enough to travel to Italy this summer to visit Rome, Florence, and Venice.

Classroom Activities

English III Dual Credit:  Quiz 7 is due April 18; Theme 4 is due April 22.; Journals are due April 25. April 30 is the late work deadline for 50 points. Final exams begin May 5.

English IIIAP: Third and fourth periods published a 1920s newspaper in conjunction with reading The Great Gatsby. Classes are preparing for the AP Language test Wednesday, May 14 at 8 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church.

English III: Sixth and seventh periods just finished reading Death of a Salesman and are beginning a poetry notebook.

Newspaper: The next issue of the paper will be posted online and also distributed April 25.

 

Course Descriptions

English III/TJC Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment English 1301/1302
Grade:  11 Length:  2 semesters CHHS Credit:  1 credit per year         GPA weight: 1.3  TJC Credit:   6 hours
Prerequisites:   Minimum average of “85”  in English II and/or teacher recommendation, THEA exempt from 10th grade TAKS scores or THEA passed
                         
Note:  Students enrolled in this course are required to pay the current Tyler Junior College tuition within the first week of each TJC semester.  Students who are not THEA exempt must register for and pass the THEA by August 1.   A grade of “B” or better in this course qualifies as two Advanced Measures on the Distinguished Achievement graduation plan.
This course emphasizes:

  • the English III TEKS-based curriculum
  • a directed study of rhetorical principles through reading types of composition while developing the students’ ability to think for themselves and to express their thoughts in correct, clear language
  • writing principles emphasizing critical and analytical thinking through the study of literature as well as directed study in techniques of writing a research paper

English III
Grade: 11     Length:  2 semesters          Credit:  1credit per year            GPA weight: 1.0
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of English II
This course emphasizes:

  • the development of American literature
  • utilizing techniques of research, grammar, usage and mechanics, and vocabulary to generate a variety of written materials
  • employing the writing process to develop composition skills by writing a variety of multi-paragraph essays of increasing complexity; emphasis on Exit Level TAKS ELA
  • developing the reading comprehension skills needed for mastery of the Exit Level TAKS ELA

English III AP
Grade:  11     Length:  2 semesters         Credit:   1 credit per year         GPA weight: 1.4
Prerequisites:  Minimum average of “85” in English II Pre-AP and/or teacher recommendation (See other prerequisites listed under English I Pre-AP.)
Note:  Students enrolled in this course are required to pay for and take the Advanced Placement Exam in Language and Composition.  The approximate cost is $45.00.  Any student who scores 3, 4, or 5 on this AP exam may earn 3 hours of college credit.  Such a score also qualifies as an Advanced Measure for the Distinguished Achievement Plan.
In addition to the English III curriculum, this course emphasizes:

  • techniques used in the AP Language and Composition Exam, including active reading of literature for acquisition of advanced vocabulary and analysis of language conventions
  • examination of United States political  and cultural history and the resulting literary response
  • writing assignments including literary research, critical analysis, and impromptu writing

English III AP Gifted and Talented
Grade:  11    Length:  2 semesters        Credit:  1 credit per year        GPA weight: 1.4
Prerequisites:  (See prerequisites listed under English I Pre-AP Gifted and Talented.)
Note:  (See note under English III AP regarding the Advanced Placement exam.)
In addition to the English III AP curriculum, this course emphasizes:

  • critical reading and analysis of American literature
  • formulation of written, oral, and creative expressions of learning and research
  • acquisition of advanced vocabulary and development of higher-order thinking skills

Newspaper I
Grades:  9-12           Length:  2 semesters         Credit:  1 credit per year             GPA weight:  1.0
Prerequisite:  Journalism/Photojournalism, Yearbook I, or English teacher recommendation
This course emphasizes:

  • the fundamental skills necessary to produce a newspaper
  • basic reporting techniques and writing styles
  • use of the computer to design and produce issues of the school newspaper, using Adobe Pagemaker, Adobe Photoshop
  • participation in UIL journalism writing contests:  news, feature, editorial, headline

Newspaper II, III, IV—Advanced Journalism
Grades:  10-12         Length:  2 semesters        Credit:  1 credit per year              GPA weight:  1.0
Prerequisite:  Newspaper I, Yearbook, Journalism/Photojournalism or teacher recommendation
This course emphasizes:

  • the use of  desktop publishing and design to produce the school newspaper
  • the techniques of sales and advertising
  • the techniques of photojournalism
  • participation in UIL journalism writing contests
