Course Description

ATHLETICS                                                                               All Year

This course focuses on acquiring kinesthetic sports skills. A physical exam must be completed by a physician prior to participating in the 7th grade athletic program. This course requires students to participate in rigorous physical conditioning as an integral part of the course. Students will have the opportunity to participate in competitive teams. Seventh grade girls will participate in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Seventh grade boys will participate in football, basketball, and track and field.

In addition, there are responsibilities for both the athlete and the parent. For the athlete, he or she must pass his or her classes every six week. The athlete must follow school rules and act responsibly in school and at all athletic functions. For the parent, responsibilities include picking up students on time after every practice and game. Athletics is not a required course, it is a privilege. Athletes may lose the privilege of participation in athletics if guidelines and expectations are not met. Rules must be followed or there will be consequences. The goals of athletics include character building, teamwork and friendship development.

EXPLORATORY                                                                          All Year

Exploratory is an elective that includes six weeks of the following: study skills, health, music, art, technology and theatre arts. The Study Skills class will be offered during the first six weeks to all exploratory students to assist them with developing the necessary skills to be a successful sixth grade student. After the first six weeks, students will rotate through the additional courses in the exploratory curriculum.

In Health students learn about the basics of physical fitness, nutrition, adolescent growth as well as friendship and relationship skills. The content helps provide students an understanding of the physical and developmental changes they are undergoing in adolescence.
